Licorice
Licorice is a flavoring confection made from the roots of the plant of the same name. It is notable for having a bittersweet flavor and its name comes from a Greek word meaning "sweet root."

The licorice plant is a member of the pea family, and is native to southern Europe, specifically the Mediterranean region. It is commonly used as a mask for the taste of medicines and as a confection in its own right. The roots are ground and boiled to create a sweet juice which can be added to other recipes or hardened into candies.
